Allegro Galería is proud to present “Andamiajes” (“Scaffoldings”), an exhibition of paintings, drawings and mixed media works by Gustavo Acosta, Luis Cruz Azaceta, Carlos Estévez, Jaime Franco and Pancho Quilici.

From the epic and often three dimensional cosmos of Pancho Quilici’s works, to the intimate metaphysical renderings of Estévez precarious life balances; from Acosta’s landscapes, suspended in time, whose atmospheres of pending doom lure the observer, to Jaime Franco’s powerful abstractions that seem like tentative markings etched in time; in each of the Museum Plans of the great Luis Cruz Azaceta, serious, erotic, cultural containers full of possibilities, Andamiajes is a show about the architecture of existence.

Their works are in the permanent collections of, among others, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Smithsonian Institution, New York, the Whitney Museum of Art, New York; Museo Nacional de Cuba, Centro Wilfredo Lam, Fort Lauderdale Art Museum, Lowe Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Miami (MoCA), Teatro Nacional de Cuba, MOLAA (Museum of Latin American Art of Long Beach, Ca), Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID), el Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá, Museo de Arte Moderno, La Tertulia (Cali), Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango (Bogotá), Museo Universidad Nacional (Bogotá), Colección Casa de las Américas (Cuba), Kunst Forum Ludwig, Germany, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Caracas, Galería de Arte Nacional de Caracas.

Mejorana Festival | Los Santos | September 23 – 28

Hundreds of musicians, dancers and artisans will meet at the “Mejorana Festival” in Guararé, Los Santos province for one of the most important events of the region. This festival begins on Tuesday, September 23 with a procession through the town at 7:00 p.m. and the celebration ends on Sunday 28. The dates coincide with the patron saint festivities of “Virgen de las Mercedes”.

The “mejoranera” is the musical instrument from which the festival takes its name. It is a type of guitar, smaller than the Spanish version and usually manufactured in the workshops of the town. It only has four strings.

The queen of the festival will be crowned on Wednesday, September 24, 8 p.m. She will preside with her court over the festivities that include a Mejorana playing competition on Thursday evening as well as accordion and drum competitions for all ages. Troupes of dancers from all parts of the country will execute regional dances and try to win the “Lorenzo Lencho Vergara” competition.

Other activities: on September 26: the Parade of the Carriages, bullfight, “Atolladero” mud fight.
