Subject: Foreign donations for Panamanian National Elections

Following is official information regarding donations to candidates for the 2009 general elections.
Article 190, paragraph 3, of the Panamanian Electoral Code reads as follows (unofficial translation):
Article 190. The following are prohibited donations or contributions to political parties and candidates:

“…
3. Donations or contributions coming from foreign governments, individuals or agencies. Exceptions are for donations or contributions from political parties, international associations of parties and foreign foundations that are linked to national parties or foundations, provided that such donations or contributions are not for election campaigns.

…”

We encourage all US citizens in Panama to avoid illegal practices that can result in incarceration or deportation. For more information on legal or illegal practices during Panamanian elections, please contact the Panamanian Tribunal Electoral at 507-8000.
